wow, i’m amazed at the description of a new Afrocentric school in Toronto. i am fascinated with the possibility of black students at least learning a little about their roots beyond the cursory mention of a few north american freedom fighters during the month of february. the idea that black youth, especially young men, are becoming more disconnected from school has been widely circulated while the idea of Afrocentric schools has been relatively ignored. it should be simple common sense to see that this is a potential solution to the alleged lack of engagement among black youth, and may provide a way to give us an inroads into understanding the ancient (and not so ancient) cultural foundations of our unique contributions to the north american societies we live in. such ideas should hardly be received as racist or segregationist, especially when opened to all… we north americans need to let go of our pathological safety blanket of denial and ignorance…
