i didn’t know what to write about, but i had a feeling like i wanted to write… so i’m going to write about a discussion i saw on the facebook this week: “are black women scaring off black men?”
actually, i’m not really going to write about that point, because i think it really is a moot argument. first of all, i don’t think the situation is as bad as people want to think. and for the problems we do have, i’m not really sure there’s a solution to that question that either side wants to hear. it always makes for explosive conversation, though. if you want to read a more serious discussion about the video, check npr’s allison keyes on the issue…
i will, however, point out that one video referred to in the ensuing discussion presented an interesting rebuttal to the popular argument that black men are weak and date white women because they can’t date strong black women. while it seems on first glance that the video portrays all black women as drama queens, i do agree that black men who date white women don’t always get the respect they deserve, or that it is always presumed that they marry white women for something other than love.
the video is a clip from tim alexander’s forthcoming(?) movie entitled tired black man. now, i neither think i’ll be paying to watch this movie, nor do i agree with the way it’s being publicized, but i did think it deserved mention as an alternative point of view on the black romantic dilemma.
