The speech by Stephen is an awesome moment in the history of the apostles. We know that Stephen must have been a man of both singular intellect and indwelling of the Holy Spirit from the words written by Luke.
What I find most important though is Stephen’s response to the indignation of the religious leaders at his allegation that they have always murdered the prophets of God, betrayed and murdered the Righteous One, and continue to be stiff-necked at the purposes of God. Does he focus on responding to their further inquiry and furor? Does he regard the certain peril he now faces?
No: from the text it is clear what he regards-the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Father!
I wish I had this same focus, but Lord knows what Stephen paid in terms of discipline and perseverance to obtain it. We must ask ourselves, in light of Stephen’s example, “What, exactly, are we looking at?”
Let us get to a place with God where we see the heavens opened and the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Father in his splendor and glory.
